Parallel Lives chapter 47

Alan had seen Karen first, just after they had both spotted Jackson’s car. To Jack’s credit, thought Alan, Jack had been unswerving in his monitoring of the Doctor’s car. Alan probably would have been as dedicated as Jack, in the absence of Karen smoothing down her suit jacket, but a lifetime of scanning his surroundings for females had alerted him to the now familiar form. They had both watched as Karen had turned to Jackson’s car and had wondered if she would get the opportunity to separate Jackson from John Staples, one of the tactics they had considered. When it became clear that Staples was going to take some time getting out of the car, Alan suggested that he went inside as per their original plan to square with the Coroner before the inquest began. Jack had nodded, without taking his eyes off the small group of cars across the road that encompassed his own car and Jackson’s.

Inside the building Alan made his way swiftly to the ante room he guessed the Coroner would use as a temporary office. Nodding at the Coroner’s assistant, who recognised Alan immediately, he tapped on the door and entered. Alfred Makeson drew his six foot frame up smartly.
‘Mr Parkinson. I’ve been waiting to speak with you,’ he boomed.
